To achieve our goals, Dermatological has undertaken multiple initiatives to improve the health literacy gap pertaining to skin health.

Below are a few ongoing projects:

Educational Outreach

Dermatological advocates for improved access to skin health education and resources through our delivery of school presentations on various topics such as sun safety and acne, reaching around 170 students in Long Island. Through these visits, members can connect with the local community and have a direct impact on young students while simultaneously gaining experience with public speaking and education.

Sun Safety Initiative

Dermatological works with skincare brands such as Bright Girl, SpotMyUV, CeraVe, and La-Roche Posay to promote sun safety. Through several sunscreen stations across the Stony Brook Campus, Dermatological hopes to educate community members on how to protect themselves against the harmful consequences of UV rays on unprotected skin.

Volunteering

Dermatological aims to give back to the community and has volunteered for various organizations, including the Block the Sun event at Jones Beach, which provides free skin cancer screenings to adults on the beach. Members have also participated in the AIM at Melanoma annual walk, where members were able to spread the initiative of sun safety.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At general meetings, the DEI chair presents skin-related topics that promote skin inclusivity and also provide members about how skin conditions can present differently depending on the type and color of your skin. Through these presentations, Dermatological strives to emphasize the importance of understanding medicine with a diverse and inclusive perspective.

Community Building

Dermatological also works to build a sense of community within the organization. Through hosting various socials such as Sun Safety certification celebrations, ice cream runs, it builds meaningful connections and allows members to make friends.

Our Awards

This past semester, Kelly attended Wolfie Tank, awarding the SBU organization $2500!

WolfieTank, like the popular TV show Shark Tank, presents a unique opportunity for members of the Stony Brook Community to showcase their talents by presenting ideas to an esteemed panel of Judges. Through this event, contestants will receive valuable feedback and expert advice from established individuals in the industry. The accepted submissions will have the chance to present their ideas to a panel of professionals as well as to the Stony Brook community in an effort to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and professional networking.

Kelly’s winning pitch explored the future of AI x Dermatology and highlighted the importance of equitable access to preventative skin health education — while proudly recognizing IMPACT Melanoma as a partner in this mission.
